When does the puzzle change?

At midnight UTC. The countdown on the result screen tells you exactly how long is left.

Does everyone get the same puzzle?

Yes. The day's shape and the day's viewpoint are the same for every player in the world, which is what makes comparing results meaningful.

I have never played. Where do I start?

With the tutorial. It is four short rounds that build up to the real game: the first opens close to the answer with a clear shape and almost nothing else in the cloud, and each one after it starts further away and gives you less to go on. The fourth is a real easy round. Tries are unlimited, the hint is free, a line of guidance follows you as you turn, and solving a round takes you straight on to the next. It never touches your streak, and you can pick it up where you left off at any time from the ? button in the corner of the game, or from the result screen.

Why is there no arrow or direction hint?

Because it would be the game. Finding the direction is the entire puzzle, so any signal that pointed towards the answer would solve it for you. The glow is a compromise: it tells you that you are close, so that you know to slow down, without telling you where to go.

Why did my lock fail when the shape looked right?

The answer is a small target, about four degrees wide. A shape can look nearly assembled while still being outside that. If a lock fails when you were sure, you were probably close, so make small movements rather than starting your search again.

Are all the fragments part of the picture?

No. The cloud contains loose shards that are made of the same material and respond to the glow identically. They exist so that you cannot identify the real fragments and work out the answer from their arrangement instead of by looking. Medium and hard go further and hide false alignments: other angles where pieces do gather, but into a smudge rather than a shape.

What happens to my streak if I miss a day?

It resets to zero. Running out of locks resets it too. Your streak counts consecutive days solved.

I cleared my browser data and lost my streak.

Streaks are stored in your browser rather than in an account, so clearing site data or switching device or browser will start you from zero. There is no way to recover a streak that has been cleared.

Can I play past puzzles?

No. A day's puzzle exists for that day only. Free play is the answer to wanting more of them: unlimited fresh puzzles at whichever difficulty you pick, none of which touch your streak. It is reached from the result screen, or from the home page once the day is done.

It will not load, or the screen is black.

Anamorph needs WebGL, which almost every current browser supports but some privacy extensions and older devices block. Try a different browser, or disable extensions for this site. If it still fails, please write to us and say what device and browser you are using.

Can I choose the difficulty?

Not on the daily. Everyone gets the same puzzle at the same difficulty, which is what makes a streak worth having. Free play is where you choose: it opens on easy, and medium and hard are one tap away, changeable between rounds. Varying the daily across the week is something we are looking at, so that the start of the week is gentler than the end.
